World Ballet Day LIVE from Australia (and the rest of the world) | Daily Review: film, stage and music reviews, interviews and more
It’s October 1 and that means it’s the inaugural World Ballet Day as five companies from five time zones let the world watch them backstage as they live stream their working day.
Australia kicks off from noon (AEST) until 4pm as the Australian Ballet rehearse for Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake in Melbourne. Then a four hourly baton change begins at at 4pm and it’s over to London (Royal Ballet), then Moscow (Bolshoi Ballet), Toronto (National Ballet of Canada) and the USA (San Francisco Ballet).
The Australian Ballet’s artistic director David McAllister told Daily Review the event had been nine months in the making.
“It is an extremely complex thing to achieve, especially as it’s never been done across the world before jumping companies and time zones. We are all very excited to make it happen for the first time!” he said. “It will be great to be seen alongside our international colleagues and demystify some of the myths about ballet and also show the amazing dedication and work that goes into presenting world class ballet performances.”
Live streaming is not new for the AB which of all Australian performing arts companies has been at the forefront of using digital technology to connect with audiences. In 2007 it live streamed The Nutcracker and Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake in 2008 into a regional cinema network.
“We also streamed our Bodytorque program live from the Sydney Theatre onto the internet. We have a number of ballets that we have captured for release and are looking for the best way to show these to the broadest audience possible.” McAllister said.
Daily Review will carry the live feed for 20 hours as World Ballet Day goes around the world.

Saw people commenting on Miko Forgarty's insta with "Happy World Ballet Day" but I didn't get to find out about it until now.. So this is what it's about! Pretty cool! I really miss ballet but I can barely find time to even check my instagram :( Was fun learning a new choreo for the hall talent thing, but I don't think I can commit cuz of all the upcoming tests. I checked with Andreas and my tech comm mates today, almost every week there's a test?! And it's like I'm spending so much time on Physics but there's not much progress!! Ugh!
Ps: HELP!!! I'm stuck on watching World Ballet LIVE!!! There's BOLSHOI BALLET!!! OMGGG!!! CA notes on my table but I can't take my eyes off the screen! :( And I was just re-watching some of Candice's interviews haha! Really loved the fact that she also thought she'd be a ballet dancer but ended up doing something better! I hope I will find something I really love doing soon, after I stopped ballet.. it's been...almost 2 years now. I stopped when my work with Victoria's Secret started on 20th October 2012.. I remember the date cuz it was Candice's birthday haha!
pss: I missed Bolshoi's live rehearsal :(( But National Ballet of Canada's Nijinsky was SUPER AMAZINGGG!!! OMG it is so good!!! I can't even describe how good, you'll have to watch it and you'll know what I mean. Your jaws will literally drop!
